All things nothing, something and Real Estate... #19
So many things go into choosing the right college for your child... Did I say choose... absolutely, because this decision should be a collaboration between parents and the student with many factors being weighed in on. What are some of the key starting factors? Grades and test scores... But don't fret if you are not able to raise your GPA significantly by your senior year, you can still study to improve your test scores. Continue to repeat your test as needed and check out Khan Academy to help you with your studying.
What exactly is your student aiming to study? (Did you know that as many as 50-70% of students change their major) Where do you research the schools and what things are you looking for? U.S. News, Niche.com, Forbes, PrincetonReview, etc. etc. Be sure to check out them all, they each have a different perspective on the schools. Then start to prioritize: Critical factors including Academics, Housing, Sports, Cost, Surrounding City, etc. Start visiting schools your Junior year instead of Spring Break senior year.
To be sure, have a broad selection of schools to apply to. Nine is a good number to start with, divided into 'Reach' (hard to get into), Middle (good chance of acceptance), Sure Thing (high chance of gettin in). Work on your essays early and refine as you go along. Be yourself in the essays. Colleges are looking for diverse student bodies so don't sell yourself short. Check out College Board and Cappex to help predict your chance of acceptance.
